New York Fashion Week (NYFW) Spring/Summer 2027 (SS27) Concludes

New York Fashion Week has concluded another edition, this one for Spring Summer 2027. The social media, forums, and blogosphere can endlessly debate where New York Fashion Week stands in prestige alongside Paris, Milan, and London, but it is clear that New York has an “American Energy” to it that the European fashion capitals don’t. There’s a reason New York tends to beat out its European peers in terms of commercialization and also the can-do attitude that is visible throughout the city, especially in the off-schedule fashion week events. CFDA, the organization behind New York Fashion Week, continues to host and organize an excellent event, but the real energy of the city is unleashed in parties and clubs – something more distinctly New York than a Paris.

New York Fashion Week also stands out in its down-to-earth practical “clothes you can wear” ethos. While it might not seem as high cultured as Paris Haute Couture, it is the practical American mindset when it comes to fashion and clothes. This year felt particularly alive – colorful and vibrant in a growing city with optimism abound. Lots of observers have already noted that this season felt more colorful with punchier and more vibrant colors throughout the runways. After parties, a must-visit during this time, were also plentiful. Vogue has good coverage on those.

There was no one silhouette or look that dominated, but the “deliberately disheveled” look was definitely prominent in several shows.

This season was also the debut of the official fur ban by the CFDA for New York Fashion Week. Another very New York thing was the deliberately open 9am slot on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 during the fashion week. The New York mood was more experimentation (not as much as London) and less commercial than the year before, reflecting the mood of a city that has undergone a change (a popular mayor) and crafting its own identity inside the country (which is unfortunately moving in the other direction from being open and welcoming like New York).

The NYFW SS27 took place from 10th to 15th September and the fashion week schedule carries on with London, Milan, and Paris in that order. Here is a fashion week calendar for SS27 and some interesting data from the folks at Tectova.

This was a big event. NYFW SS27 had 58 runway shows with over 1500 model appearances. As expected, the whole city comes alive during this time. It isn’t as “exclusive” as Paris or Milan, but combining the commercial and celebrity cultures of America, with the energy of New York produces a one of a kind event each season.
